چکیده

The aim of this paper is to extend our knowledge about the power-law relationship between citationbased performance and collaboration patterns for papers in the natural sciences. We analyzed 829,924 articles that received 16,490,346 citations. The number of articles published through collaboration account for 89%. The citation-based performance and collaboration patterns exhibit a power-law correlation with a scaling exponent of 1.20 ± 0.07. Citations to a subfield’s research articles tended to increase 2.1.20 or 2.30 times each time it doubles the number of collaborative papers. The scaling exponent for the power-law relationship for single-authored papers was 0.85 ± 0.11. The citations to a subfield’s single-authored research articles increased 2.0.85 or 1.89 times each time the research area doubles the number of non-collaborative papers. The Matthew effect is stronger for collaborated papers than for single-authored. In fact, with a scaling exponent < 1.0 the impact of single-author papers exhibits a cumulative disadvantage or inverse Matthew effect.

Scholarly network similarities: How bibliographic coupling networks, citation networks, cocitation networks, topical networks, coauthorship networks, and coword networks relate to each other

This study is motivated to explore the similarity among six types of scholarly networks aggregated at the institution level, including bibliographic coupling networks, citation networks, co-citation networks, topical networks, coauthorship networks, and co-word networks. Cosine distance is chosen to measure the similarities among the six networks. We find that topical networks and coauthorship ...

Homophily in coauthorship networks of East European sociologists

We study to what degree and how homophily and network properties affect individual citation counts of researchers in the sociology departments of three East European countries, namely Poland, Romania, and Slovenia. We built first-order personal coauthorship networks out of the Web of Science publication records. Each sociologist is assigned as a focal node or ego, while her coauthors are alters...

Fostering National Research Networks: The Case of Turkish Coauthorship Patterns in the Social Sciences

We analyse the coauthorship networks of researchers affiliated at universities in Turkey by using two databases: the international SSCI database and the Turkish ULAKBIM database. We find that coauthorship networks are composed largely of isolated groups, permitting little knowledge diffusion. Moreover, there seems to be two disparate populations of researchers. While some scholars publish mostl...
